Meet Sean McGee

From defending our country as a U.S. Marine — to keeping our streets safe as a police officer — to coaching and mentoring countless children on the ball field — Sean has been an ardent defender of the American way of life.  His drive, morals, and willingness to stand up for what is right, reflect his continuing sense of duty and determination to make Suffolk a better place to raise and educate our kids.

BIOGRAPHY

The son of a dedicated teacher and manufacturing laborer, Sean was born in 1982 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  At the age of 12, he and his family moved to Kissimmee, Florida where he completed middle school and high school. Growing up in a biracial family, Sean learned firsthand how to see beyond the color of one's skin and instead see people for what really matters- their character.  The lessons he learned as a child shaped him into who he is today and have allowed him to work effectively with people from a diverse array of backgrounds.

Upon high school graduation in 2001 at age 18, Sean joined the U.S. Marine Corps — at a time when many young Americans were fearful of military service following the events of 9/11. Sean graduated from boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and served four years of active duty in the Marine Corps infantry (2001-2005), including fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004-2005), earning him a combat action ribbon.  Sean says becoming a Marine was one of the best decisions he ever made.  He credits the Corps with teaching him the importance of discipline, teamwork, standing up for what you believe in, and the virtues of honor, courage, and commitment.

Following military service, Sean joined the Newport News Police Department (2005-2011) where he worked as a patrol officer, street level gang and drug enforcement officer, and a narcotics detective.  During this time, he also served as a member of the SWAT team and coordinated numerous joint investigations with neighboring law enforcement agencies, the FBI, Homeland Security and the DEA.

In 2011, Sean felt called to leave the police department and serve our nation in a different capacity.  He took on a private security contract and provided personal security to U.S. diplomats and foreign dignitaries in Iraq, to include our current President and the late Senator McCain.  During this time, Sean sought to further his education and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University in 2012.

After completing his contract and returning home, Sean was hired by the United States Department of the Air Force in 2013.  Since that time, he has taken on several positions, including managing the Civilian Police Department at LAFB (2013-2017) and serving as the installations Antiterrorism and Critical Asset Risk Program Manager (2017-2023).  Currently, Sean oversees all critical assets at 13 Air Combat Command Bases, as well as critical assets at several Combatant Commands across the globe.

Sean and his wife Heather, a native of Suffolk and proud Biology teacher at Lakeland High School, moved to Whaleyville in 2014 to raise their five children on a 15-acre farm.   In his spare time, Sean volunteers as a coach for the Coastal Storm travel softball team and has been a long-time baseball coach at Suffolk Youth Athletic Association.  Sean is a true outdoors man and can often be found hunting or fishing when he has the time.  Sean and his family have a strong faith in God and are active members of The Depot Church in Wakefield, Virginia.  As the husband of a teacher and father of school age children, all of whom attend Suffolk Public Schools, Sean has experienced the pros and cons of public education. He is excited to bring fresh ideas and a diverse perspective to the Suffolk School Board and believes that through hard work, all students have the potential to be strong, prosperous, and successful.
